At least 18 police officers were injured during a rally of thousands on Saturday night in Berlin against restrictive stamps over the coronavirus, police in the German capital said.

Three of the victims are being treated at a hospital, Twitter said.

The demonstration gathered more than 20,000 demonstrators, was guarded by 1,100 law enforcement officers and the event was stopped after police forcibly removed its organizers from the rostrum.

Protesters danced and sang “We Are Free People” to the sounds of Queen’s hit “We Will Rock You.” Participants in the march, which passed through the city center, carried posters reading “We are noisy because you stole our freedom!” and “Think! Don’t wear a mask!”.

“We want to return to democracy,” a protester told Reuters, adding that “the masks that enslave us must go away.”

Police in riot gear stormed a rally on Friday, removing hundreds of protesters by truck. The protesters were criticized by politicians, and Social Democrat co-chair Saksiya Esken called them “covidiots.”

“They are not only threatening our health, they are threatening our success against the pandemic,” said Esken, whose party is Angela Merkel’s coalition partner.

However, many people in Germany are against the restrictions.

“Only a handful of scholars in the world who support government measures are heard,” said protester Peter Konz.

The action took place against the background of increasing cases of coronavirus in the country. For the last 24 hours, 955 people have been infected with Covid-19. Daily growth over the past week has fluctuated between 600 and 1,000 people, the rate last recorded in Germany in June.
