“Many of our patients have diabetes ballast,” Widyastuti said in an online discussion on Wednesday, August 5, 2020.
Head of Disease Prevention and Control Division of DKI Jakarta Health Office, Dwi Oktavia, said the prevalence of diabetes in the Capital City was high. From the results of 2018 basic health research, he said, the prevalence of diabetes in Jakarta reached 3.4 percent of the total population.
With this prevalence, the number of diabetics in Jakarta has the potential to reach 260 thousand people. However, according to Dwi Oktavia, 160,000 people have entered the local government.
According to Dwi, with a prevalence of 3.4 percent, the number of confirmed positive diabetics in Covid-19 in Jakarta is estimated at 700-800 people. While until Tuesday, August 4, 2020, the total number of positive confirmed patients of Covid-19 in Jakarta has reached 22 thousand people.
“But from their data that comes in, there are 500-600 people identified (positive Covid-19 with comorbid diabetes),” Dwi Oktavia said.
Internal medicine specialist, Roy Panusunan Sibarani explained that diabetes is not included in the risk factors for contracting Covid-19. Simply stated, he said, diabetes is related to the hormone secreted by the pancreas, namely insulin.
While Covid-19 is not yet known whether it is affected by human insulin. But according to him, the risk of fatality from Covid-19 will be higher if experienced by diabetics.
“Because sugar has made the body damaged, the immunity of diabetics is low. Continue to be entered again by Covid-19, the fatality is high,” he said.
