Trump: The United States is ending endless wars

US President Donald Trump told West Point Military Academy graduates that his job is to protect the country’s vital interests, not to wage endless wars in distant lands. The American soldier must defend the United States against foreign enemies. Not to fight endless battles outside, he said. The statement came after much criticism over plans to withdraw some 10,000 US troops from Germany.

At the same time, it became clear that the United States would take an aggressive stance against the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, threatening sanctions against its judges if they continued to investigate alleged war crimes committed by Americans in Afghanistan. The US position was defined some time ago by former Secretary of State John Bolton, who said they would use all necessary means to protect their citizens from “unfair prosecution by this illegitimate court.”

The United States did not ratify the Treaty of Rome, which established the International Criminal Court in 2002, with then-US President George W. Bush opposing the court. His successor, Barack Obama, has taken some steps to co-operate with the institution in The Hague.
