In the past two months, 15 to 20 percent fewer suicides and attempts by the police have been recorded in the Netherlands than in the same period last year. At the same time, police records of confused behavior have increased by 18 to 20 percent. The decrease in the number of suicides is particularly striking; many experts today expect a sharp increase.

The figures are in weekly reports on vulnerable groups that researcher Bauke Koekkoek makes for the National Operational Team Corona (LOT-c) in the Netherlands. This is a service center in which, among others, the 25 security regions, police, fire brigade and Defense work together to keep a finger on the pulse in various areas during the corona crisis.

The researcher finds it difficult to explain the decrease in suicide rates. “It is clear that the social situation is really different from normal now. There are now many more people who feel displaced. Maybe this will make some feel less ‘different’ lately. But it may also be that some people wait and see what will happen next. ”
