The United States is planning a large-scale test involving more than 100,000 volunteers on half a dozen or more of the most promising candidates for the Covid-19 vaccine in a bid to deliver a safe and effective one by the end of 2020, Reuters reported, citing researchers leading the program.

The project will compress what usually takes about 10 years to develop and test vaccines, reducing this process to a few months.

To get there, leading vaccine manufacturers have agreed to share data and allow their competitors to use their networks for clinical trials if their own vaccine candidate fails, the researchers said.

Candidate vaccines that demonstrate safety in small early studies will be tested in large trials on 20,000 to 30,000 subjects for each vaccine, and these trials are due to begin in July.

Between 100,000 and 150,000 people could be included in the studies, said Dr. Larry Corey, a vaccine expert at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, who is helping to develop the upcoming tests.

The effort is part of the White House’s Operation Warp Speed program, which was set up a few days ago and aims to accelerate the development of a coronavirus vaccine.
