The United States has sanctioned 24 Chinese companies for links to military activities – World

On Friday, the United States Department of Commerce imposed sanctions on 24 Chinese government and trade organizations for “engaging in activities contrary to the interests of national security or foreign policy.”

Companies accused of links to weapons of mass destruction and military action include those based in mainland China, as well as in Hong Kong and the Cayman Islands.

“The new addition to the list of companies demonstrates our commitment to preventing the use of American goods and technology in activities that undermine our interests,” said Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.

The trade ministry also added nine Chinese companies to its “blacklist” of legal entities, claiming they were “accomplices” in human rights abuses against Xinjiang’s Muslim minorities.

The move comes amid growing tensions between Washington and Beijing over the coronavirus, as well as China’s proposed national security law in Hong Kong.
