Last Thursday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry office in Hong Kong condemned the remarks of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on the extent of Hong Kong’s independence.

“The spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry in Hong Kong strongly condemns and protests the condemnations of the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo and other officials, over the accusations of the central government and the administration of the administrative region of exerting undue pressure,” said a statement on the office’s website.

It is noteworthy that the central government and the Hong Kong government are making all efforts to combat the epidemic and revive the economy, and US officials have repeatedly made irresponsible statements about the implementation of the functions of the legislative and judicial bodies in Hong Kong, and tried to justify the behavior of the participants in the anti-China protests.

Pompeo announced last Wednesday that Washington was questioning the independence of Hong Kong from China, which could lead to changes in US policy, and said that the treatment recently received by pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong made it difficult to assess whether the city was still independent of China is a condition for obtaining special treatment under US law.

Under the “one country, two systems” principle, Hong Kong has theoretically until 2047 semi-independent and very broad freedoms that do not exist elsewhere in China, such as an independent judiciary.
