The Center sent troops to meet Mamata’s request; Army launches in Calcutta | Army


KOLKATA: The central government has taken immediate steps on the demand of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to send troops to restore the infrastructure damaged in the Um-Pun cyclone. The Defense Ministry has decided to send troops to Bengal soon. Five columnists of the Army arrived in Kolkata.

The Home Ministry tweeted that West Bengal needs more help in the wake of the Um-Pun cyclone, which is under pressure from the Kovid lockdown. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has also announced that it is sending 10 more teams to help West Bengal. This is in addition to the NDRF’s 26 teams currently deployed in different parts of the state.

The government of Bengal has requested the help of the railways, the port authorities and the private sector to repair the infrastructure. At least 85 people have died in the Um-Pun cyclone that devastated West Bengal. In the capital, Kolkata alone, 15 people have died. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who visited the disaster-hit areas, had on Wednesday accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of making a preliminary assessment of the damages caused by the cyclone. Prime Minister Modi has announced an interim funding of Rs 1,000 crore.

Mamata Banerjee had earlier called on railway authorities to suspend trains to the state till May 26. It was pointed out that the Shramik trains could not be taken care of by the district administration in the wake of the cyclone.
