There is fatigue in the epidemic process and we are approaching the end of the epidemic. “This was said to BNR by Assoc. Prof. Georgi Popov, head of the Infectious Diseases Clinic at the Military Medical Academy and a member of the National Operations Staff.According to him, there will be isolated cases – some days more, some days less, but “we are steadily going to the epidemic queue”, he was categorical. “Bulgaria’s healthcare system has managed thanks to the fact that the blow was not as strong as in Italy and we had the experience of Western Europe and China,” he said.

Assoc. Prof. Popov told about the visit of a group of Bulgarian doctors for exchange of experience in the research center of the hospital in Pavia, Italy:

“Over 5,000 patients with Covid-19 have gone through this hospital and have a lot of experience, publications and in world-famous journals, so you can trust their scientific achievements. What impressed us the most was the plasma treatment. “They have developed methods for evaluating the plasma of donors with an antibody scale. Those donors who had an antibody level in their plasma 1 in 160 were hyperimmune, hyperimmune plasma, which they administered to their 48 patients.” Assoc. Prof. Popov pointed out that the method used in Bulgaria is even better because the plasma is not frozen.

The observations on the developed immunity in the survivors of the coronavirus infection are that after about 3 months it is exhausted, emphasizes Assoc. Prof. Georgi Popov, specifying that these are the findings of Italian scientists. He reminded again that the virus is very virulent and dangerous, which should remind the need for strict observance of hygiene and safety measures and distance.

“The combination of unpreparedness in the beginning, the virulent virus, concentration in the performance of one’s official duties and the possibility of becoming infected outside one’s workplace – I consider these factors to infect a large number of medical professionals,” he said.

According to Assoc. Prof. Popov, the myth that patients die from concomitant diseases, not from Covid-19, has already been shattered and added that the virus seriously damages even healthy organisms.

The doctor doubted that a vaccine against the coronavirus would be developed any time soon, but was optimistic that the vaccine might not be needed.
