NATO meets extraordinary for US withdrawal from Open Skies

The agreement has been in force since 2002

NATO is meeting in extraordinary session. The reason is the decision of the United States to withdraw from the Open Skies Treaty. The agreement, which entered into force in 2002, allows unarmed aerial surveillance in the territories of the 35 participating countries.

In this way, they can openly gather information about the armed forces and activities of other countries.

US to withdraw from Open Skies treaty

Washington will formally withdraw in 6 months. Russia’s foreign ministry has responded that the decision is regrettable, adding that the Trump administration is working against arms control agreements.

“Russia and we have established very good relations. As you know, we worked together on the oil problem. I think we have very good relations with Russia. But Russia does not adhere to the agreement, so once they do not adhere, we will withdraw. There is a chance that we will reach a new agreement or do something to fix this, “said US President Donald Trump.
