At least 80 people have died in the Umpun cyclone. Opposition parties called it a national disaster. The Prime Minister’s visit to Bengal was followed by Mamata’s plea for help without looking into politics. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said that the aerial surveillance in the districts of Kolkata, North and South Parganas has caused a loss of Rs 1 lakh crore.
The Center has രൂപ 5900 crore claimed by the state including food subsidy. Mamata Banerjee called for generous assistance. The Prime Minister announced Rs 1,000 crore as emergency relief, Rs 2 lakh for the dependents of the dead and Rs 50,000 for the injured. The Prime Minister also said that a central team would be sent to assess the damage. Mamata’s response was that it was unclear whether the package was a multi-crore advance.
Mamata also reminded her that the center and the state have a duty to help the victims. The Umpoon was wreaked havoc as the Bengal and the central government continued to fight on issues including Kovid’s defense. Kerala too had come to the request of handing over Bengal. The Prime Minister arrived in Odisha in the afternoon and conducted aerial surveillance of the devastating coastal districts. The Odisha government has informed the Prime Minister that one lakh hectares of land has been destroyed and 45 lakh people have been affected.
