In second place in the curious ranking is another football legend – Ronaldo da Lima. He won the Golden Ball twice and scored a total of 36 goals in European tournaments with PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona, Inter and Real Madrid, but never reached the Champions League final. The top three is complemented by another great Brazilian striker – Romario, who became the top scorer in the Champions League in the 1992/93 season, but never even reached the semifinals of the competition.
In the top 10 follow Gianluigi Buffon (three lost finals), Roberto Baggio, Robert Lewandowski (goal scorer number 4 in the history of the Champions League), Eric Cantona, Lothar Matheus (two lost finals with Bayern after a turnaround in the last minutes), Zlatan Ibrahimovic 31 club trophies, but not the Champions League) and Denis Bergkamp.
The ranking also includes the Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov, who is placed on the 24th position. Berbatov reached three finals in the Champions League, one with Bayer Leverkusen and two with Manchester United, but lost in all three.
