Subjected to harsh criticism in the media…

The Republican-controlled upper house of Congress approved the candidacy by 49 to 44 votes, with Republicans voting in favor and Democrats voting against.

The vote went under strict party discipline.

It came months before the November US presidential election.

John Ratcliffe will replace Richard Grenell, who intends to join Donald Trump’s campaign headquarters.

Ratcliffe was previously elected to the Texas House of Representatives and belonged to the conservative Republican wing. Donald Trump nominated him for this post in February.

The director of U.S. national intelligence coordinates the activities of 17 U.S. intelligence services, including the CIA and FBI (counterintelligence), as well as specialized intelligence departments of the State Department, the Pentagon, the Treasury Department, the Department of Energy, and other agencies.
