Iran has begun withdrawing from Syria

Iran is gradually withdrawing from Syria in response to Israeli air strikes and growing domestic discontent over Iran’s weak economy and Tehran’s response to the new coronavirus pandemic, the Israeli military was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.

Since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war, Israel has repeatedly launched air strikes on Iranian military forces in that country and on the supply of advanced weapons to the Iranian-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah, which has also sent its fighters to Syria, BTA reports.

According to the Israeli military, Iranian forces in Syria are moving to more remote areas, where they are in small numbers. This download is not massive, but it is indisputable, they said.

According to them, the withdrawal is due in part to growing dissatisfaction in Iran with the economic collapse due to US sanctions and the inability of the authorities to control the spread of the new coronavirus.
