Despite disputes over the areas of Kalapani, Limpiyadhura and Lipulekh, Nepal’s objections have been fueled by India’s creation of a new map in 2019. The map of India was drawn up with the newly divided Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Kalapani and Lipuluk are part of India on this map. Six months after the release of the map of India covering the disputed territories, Nepal has come out with opposition.

India has been behind the Nepal dispute for years. The two countries share an 1800 km border. But it is Nepal who is arguing the most for the disputed areas. Nepal claims that it was based on the 1816 Treaty of Sougalli with British colonial rulers to define the border. Nepal has also accused India of deploying troops in disputed territories since 1962.
