A Saudi dissident who fled to the United States for criticizing the authorities in Riyadh was brutally murdered at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October 2018. However, the trial in the kingdom is a farce, which is conducted in complete secrecy.
“We, the sons of the martyr Jamal Hashoghi, announce that we forgive those who killed our father. We are seeking revenge from the Almighty, “Salah Hashoghi, one of the sons of the slain journalist, wrote on Twitter. The “forgiveness” was given in the holy month for Muslims, and according to the Daily Sabah, it could serve as a pretext for pardoning the killers in the trial. Justice in the conservative Islamic monarchy is based on traditional Islamic law.
Hashoghi’s sons’ statement could save the execution of the five detained agents suspected of Hashoghi’s murder. The royal family in Riyadh denies any direct connection to the assassination, although Turkish intelligence is convinced that the order was given at the highest level. The Western services are also convinced that such a murder, especially in the diplomatic building, cannot be committed without the knowledge of the Saudi government. The journalist’s fiancée, Hatice Cengiz, said no one had the right to forgive the killers. Hashoghi’s body was never found. The investigation established that the journalist was killed in a particularly painful way, and the dismembered body was destroyed.
