The Lenexpo Exhibition Center in St. Petersburg has been turned into a temporary hospital for patients with coronavirus. But why are there patients with mental disorders and those who have not been treated by COVID-19, asks “Deutsche Welle”.

“There are no serious problems that interfere with normal work. The treatment process is going smoothly, everything is being done,” said the hospital’s management. But is that so?

In principle, the authorities’ idea was to place patients with mild COVID-19 in the temporary hospital. Elmira Abdulkadirova ended up there from the oncology center where she was receiving chemotherapy. After the third of her coronavirus tests was positive, she was isolated for a week at the oncology center, after which she ended up in Lenexpo, according to the doctors’ decision.
The Lenexpo Exhibition Center in St. Petersburg has been turned into a temporary hospital for patients with coronavirus. But why are there patients with mental disorders and those who have not been treated with COVID-19?

The woman would have preferred to rent accommodation for the period of quarantine, but the management of the oncology center insisted on transferring her to the temporary hospital. She was even threatened with the gendarmerie.

“Meets the minimum requirements”

“At first everything was fine, a beautiful, new hospital. The doctors came every day,” the woman said. Patients became more and more, but not the medical staff, and conditions began to deteriorate. All this – against the background of the intention of the Governor of St. Petersburg Alexander Beglov to increase the number of beds by another 1,300. toilets.

The response of the city authorities reads: “Of course, the conditions are different from those in hotels or sanatoriums, but they meet the minimum requirements.” Authorities also deny allegations that people with mental disorders were accommodated at Lenexpo. But a video from the State Gazette shows one patient walking around the pavilion with his pants down and another patient screaming for no apparent reason.

Filling the hospital – state policy

As eyewitnesses told the State Gazette, it is extremely difficult to transfer from Lenexpo to an apartment (in mild cases) or to an ordinary hospital (in more severe cases). So far, this has only been possible after phone calls to the Health Committee or Instagram posts indicating that patients are not receiving the help they need.

Among the medical staff at Lenexpo, it is said that the filling of the exhibition center to the limit is probably on the instructions of the governor. There are also fears that under the current conditions not only the infected cannot be cured, but also the healthy can become infected.

“Better that way than in Italy”

Despite all the dissatisfaction and criticism, city officials are adamant that there are no violations at Lenexpo. In the words of Governor Beglov, who had to justify the situation to President Putin: “It’s better that way than in tents like in Italy or in other cities where people are accommodated on mattresses.” And both the Russian Federal Consumer Protection Service and the prosecutor’s office have stated that they have no claims to the conditions of stay in the temporary hospital.
