“The United States condemns the proposal to unilaterally and arbitrarily impose legislation on Hong Kong’s national security,” said US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Reuters reported.
U.S. senators have said they will submit legislative proposals to impose sanctions on Chinese officials over Beijing’s new law to protect national security in Hong Kong. The law envisions strengthening “enforcement mechanisms” for security in the semi-autonomous territory following a wave of pro-democracy protests last year.
“The United States urges Beijing to reconsider its disastrous proposal, to comply with its international obligations and to respect Hong Kong’s high level of autonomy, democratic institutions and civil liberties, which are key to maintaining its special status under US law,” Pompeo said. Britain also expects China to respect Hong Kong’s rights and freedoms and is committed to ensuring the region’s autonomy.
