At the age of 93, one of the legends and founders of the great successes of Bulgarian women’s basketball in the 50s of the last century – Kalinka Simanova-Toteva, passed away, the Bulgarian Basketball Federation announced.
Born in Nova Zagora on June 21, 1926, she played basketball from 1940 to 1959. She wore the team of Rakovski, RR-43, Spartak and Lokomotiv (Sofia). An integral part of the women’s national team from its inception in 1942 to 1956, being its captain for 12 years. Twice she is one step away from the medals of the European Championships – in 1952 and 1956. Simanova-Toteva is one of the girls who played the first match of the national team of our country – in 1943 in Budapest. She is a champion of Bulgaria 7 times and winner of the Cup of Bulgaria in 1951.
“European title, European cups, Olympic medals, world fame – all this is embedded in the shadow of a generation, which we invariably and fairly associate with the name of Simanova,” wrote in one of her books popular journalist Nadezhda Bogdanova. In her text, the journalist continues: “It is not necessary to dig a lot in the old newspapers – she will look at it from the first pages. Anyone who remembers her from the court will recognize her without the name, which is almost never missing in the titles under the heading “Basketball”. Simanova, Kalinka, Kiro. Anyone who hasn’t seen him play has missed at least ten of the capital letters in the alphabet of our big women’s basketball. ”
Her life is completely connected with basketball – the wife of another legend of the game in our country – Konstantin Totev. Her daughter Ivanka Toteva has been part of the FIBA World Basketball Federation team for years.
The service will take place at a later stage, when her closest people manage to return to Bulgaria.
A homage to her eternal memory!
