SAN SALVADOR (Sputnik) – The President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, admitted that the coronavirus (causing the COVID-19 disease) spreads faster than expected in this Central American nation, where there would be more cases circulating and undetected.

“The numbers would seem not to be alarming, but if we see the mathematical progression, it is much faster than we originally anticipated and possibly there are already cases circulating in our country, which we have not yet detected,” Bukele commented on his Twitter account.

The president ratified his government’s commitment to the search and isolation of possible epidemiological links, although he insisted that the only way to effectively fight against the pandemic is to stay home.
Bukele ordered on March 20 a house quarantine for 30 days, as part of the mobility restriction included in the state of emergency approved by the Legislative on March 15, without the votes of the parliamentary left.
El Salvador registers 13 confirmed cases of coronavirus, including two infections in the country, in a family in the department of San Ana (west), who violated a household quarantine and may have infected other people in their environment.

In late 2019 China reported an outbreak of pneumonia in the city of Wuhan, capital of the province of Hubei (southeast), caused by a new strain of coronavirus.

There were 414,179 confirmed cases and 18,440 deaths from the virus worldwide, according to the latest report from the World Health Organization (WHO) published on March 24.
