BERGAMO, ITALY (Sputnik) – The vice president of the Italian region of Lombardy, Fabrizio Sala, thanked Russia for the help in the fight against the coronavirus.

The official stated at a press conference that Russia’s presence in Italy “demonstrates that it is a worldwide problem and the scale of the problem shows that it is necessary to join efforts.”

Sala stressed that Italy needs Russian help, first of all, in terms of medical personnel.
For his part, the mayor of the Italian city of Bergamo, Giorgio Gori, recalled that this cooperation began after negotiations by the Italian Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, and the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, and the defense ministers of the two countries. and “today we are in Lombardy where this collaboration will take place for the first time”.
On the night of March 25-26, a Russian delegation of 104 military specialists, including doctors and health workers, arrived in Bergamo to help manage the crisis caused by the coronavirus.

The Russian military brought with them:

  • A mobile analysis and diagnosis team;
  • High-performance means for disinfection;
  • Disinfectants;
  • Special equipment to care for patients with coronavirus in serious condition.

The Consul General of Russia in Milan, Alexandr Nurizade, also thanked the arrival of the Russian doctors.

“It was always that way in history, when problems came home, whether in Italy or Russia, friends always came to the rescue,” said the Russian consul, “only with common efforts can we combat this evil.”

Italy is currently the European country most affected by the coronavirus, with 62,013 infected and 8,165 deaths to date.

At the same time, more than 10,300 people have already been cured.
