Germany closes its borders with France, Austria and Switzerland

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – German Chancellor Angela Merkel, together with Interior Minister Horst Seehofer, and the prime ministers of various federal states made the decision to close the borders with France, Austria and Switzerland from March 16, Bild newspaper revealed.

The media indicated that the measure, which will take effect at 8:00 am (local time), will prevent the spread of the virus in the country, as well as prevent the aggravation of supply problems.

Until now 5,426 cases were registered in Germany of the new coronavirus, 827 of them recent.

The number of deaths from COVID-19 in the national territory amounts to 11, two of them occurred very recently.
Meanwhile, in the last 24 hours 841 cases of infection were registered in Switzerland of the new coronavirus, there are 2,200 patients in the country, the Federal Public Health Office reported.
Of the 2,200 cases registered in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, 1,563 people confirmed their disease through two laboratory tests.

On March 11, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined the disease COVID-19 as a pandemic, caused by a new coronavirus that began to spread from the Chinese city of Wuhan (southeast) in late 2019.

To date, almost 163,000 cases of infection have been recorded worldwide, including more than 6,000 deaths. More than 76,000 people have already recovered from the infection.

Of the more than 80,000 active cases, most are concentrated today in China, Italy, Iran, South Korea and Spain.
