German Interior Minister refuses to shake hands with Merkel for fear of coronavirus

MOSCOW / BERLIN (Sputnik) – German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer declined to shake hands with the country’s federal chancellor Angela Merkel for fear of the coronavirus, the tabloid Bild said.

It is specified that the situation took place during a meeting with representatives of migrant associations in Berlin.

When Seehofer refused to shake hands with Merkel, the chancellor raised her hands and showed her palms to the Interior Minister, then they both laughed.

Seehofer previously stated that temporarily avoid handshakes due to rapid spread of the coronavirus in Europe.

This March 2 it was reported that the number of people infected with the virus in Germany increased to 150 people.

“In Germany, 150 cases of infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus have been confirmed to date,” said the Robert Koch Institute, responsible for disease statistics in Germany.
The cases of contagion were recorded in ten of the 16 federated states of the country, the majority, in North Rhine-Westphalia (86 cases) and Bavaria, where the outbreak of the coronavirus originated in Germany (25 cases).
At the end of 2019, China reported a pneumonia outbreak in Wuhan City, caused by a new coronavirus strain which was called SARS-CoV-2, while the disease it causes was called COVID-19.

Globally, the virus has already infected more than 89,800 people in more than 60 countries and caused more than 3,000 deaths, the overwhelming majority in mainland China.
