BEIJING (Sputnik) – China calls on the relevant countries to immediately lift sanctions against Iran, which does its utmost to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang.

“China calls on all parties involved to immediately lift the corresponding sanctions on Iran to avoid further damage to the Iranian economy and to the lives of the population,” Geng told reporters.

Iranian President Hassan Rohaní wrote in letters to leaders in several countries that US sanctions have caused $ 200 billion in losses to his country, as well as hindering the worldwide fight against the coronavirus.
Rohaní also indicated that Iran faces serious limitations related to US sanctions and the policy of maximum pressure on Tehran.
Since March 11, the World Health Organization (WHO) classifies the disease COVID-19, caused by a new coronavirus, as a pandemic. began to spread from the Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019.

Throughout the world, more than 169,000 cases of infection were recorded, including more than 6,500 deaths. Some 77,700 people have already recovered from the infection.
