Van der Werff: ‘Cincinnati players angry and disappointed after Jans’ departure’ NOW

Maikel van der Werff and his teammates at FC Cincinnati disagree with the forced departure of trainer Ron Jans. The Dutch defender would have liked the situation to be resolved differently.

“We have been told by the team management that Ron has offered his resignation this morning. That is very unfortunate,” Van der Werff told Tuesday Veronica Inside.

“We were not allowed to communicate with each other in the last few days from the committee of inquiry, but I will definitely talk to him. There is anger and disappointment in the players’ group. Ron did not deserve this.”

The 61-year-old Jans was discredited because he sang along in the dressing room with a hip-hop number in which the word nigger occurs. The MLS started an investigation after a complaint from a Cincinnati player. Jans did not wait for the result and offered his resignation on Tuesday.

“We were wonderfully busy under Jans”

According to 30-year-old Van der Werff, who exchanged Vitesse for Cincinnati last summer, Jans was in the right place at the American club.

“We were busy preparing for the new season. The group feeling was good and we won many competitions. We became last last season, but that was our first season in the MLS.”

“Incidentally, Ron couldn’t do much about it, he only started nine games before the end and we were undefeated in the last five games. We are determined to hit next season, unfortunately without Ron.”

Van der Werff has company of fellow countryman J├╝rgen Locadia at Cincinnati. Very likely Siem de Jong will also be joining the formation in the short term; he comes over from Ajax.
