While only two days ago Agnès Buzyn said on France Inter that she could not replace Benjamin Griveaux because of the coronavirus and his busy schedule, this Sunday, February 16, the Minister of Health announced his decision to leave his post to get involved as a LREM candidate in the race for mayor of Paris.

Two days were enough for Agnes Buzyn to change her mind regarding the possibility of being LREM’s candidate to replace Benjamin Griveaux in the municipal campaign in Paris.

Questioned Friday, February 14 following the dissemination of intimate videos attributed to Benjamin Griveaux who at that time had not yet announced his withdrawal, the then Minister of Health Agnès Buzyn said he was too busy with current affairs including the Chinese coronavirus epidemic.

“I cannot be a candidate for municipal elections […], I already had a very busy agenda, I have a lot of reforms in the ministry, and there was added additional work, unexpectedly unfortunately, with the coronavirus crisis, which today occupies me a lot. I had told Benjamin Griveaux despite my support that I could not commit to him, “she said then.

However, this Sunday, January 16, she finally declared that she had applied for this election and announced her resignation from the post of minister.

“I go there with heart, with commitment, with seriousness, with determination. I’m going to win. I have always lived in this city, I was born there, I worked there, I raised my children there, I know it ”, she underlined.

New Minister of Health Appointed

A few hours after Agnès Buzyn’s announcement, Emmanuel Macron appointed the deputy and doctor Olivier Véran to replace her as Minister of Solidarity and Health.

According to information from France Info, it was the French President who convinced the now ex-minister to lead the LREM list after the withdrawal of Mr. Griveaux. According to the Elysee Palace, Emmanuel Macron welcomes the “heart and commitment decision” of Agnès Buzyn and his desire “to lead the electoral fight in Paris”.
