The last day of the Nice carnival canceled because of the coronavirus


The mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, announced that the last day of the Nice carnival would be canceled as a precaution, although no case of coronavirus is currently registered in this city.

The last day of the Nice carnival which was to end on Saturday February 29 has been canceled “as a preventive measure”, announced on Wednesday the mayor Christian Estrosi, even if “for the moment no case” of coronavirus has been detected in this city on the French Riviera.

“For me, health must come first. It seems to me to be the most responsible decision while Liguria and Piedmont [nord de l’Italie] are undergoing action against the Covid-19, ”the mayor tweeted.

With its tens of thousands of spectators each year, the Nice carnival attracts “an important international flow and in particular our Italian neighbors”, added the mayor.

Flower battle already canceled

No demonstration was planned by Saturday where a battle of flowers and a night corso were to be held. Due to strong gusts of wind, the flower battle scheduled for Wednesday February 26 had already been canceled.

The tradition will be respected, nevertheless underlines the town hall since Sunday “the king” of this 136th edition on the theme of “King of Fashion” will be burned and the theme of next year announced.

Lemon Festival in Menton

Menton, a border town with Italy, has also canceled the last days of the lemon festival which was to last until March 3. More than 200,000 people come each year to admire the monumental citrus carvings. This cancellation should deprive the demonstration of tens of thousands of visitors this year.

The new coronavirus affects around 40 countries around the world. Italy is the most affected European state with around 400 cases and 12 deaths.
