BEIJING (Sputnik) – The Jack Ma Foundation, belonging to the richest man in China and founder of Alibaba Group, Jack Ma, donated another 10 million yuan (1.43 million dollars) to support the development of drugs against the new strain of coronavirus, the Foundation reported.

The respective agreement was signed between the Jack Ma Foundation, the Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Diseases, the Alibaba Cloud Company and the Zhong Nanshan Medical Foundation, a prestigious Chinese expert in respiratory diseases.

“The agreement provides for the execution of two independent projects, for which a financial aid of 10 million yuan is offered to the team of the academic Zhong Nanshan. The projects seek to accelerate the research and development of new drugs for clinical treatment,” he said. the note published by the Jack Ma Foundation on the WeChat social network.

Alibaba Cloud, in turn, will provide free of charge all its computing power necessary for the development of new drugs and the study of viral gene sequencing.

“We are deeply convinced that the joint efforts of all parties will help to achieve important advances in research and the development of new drugs for clinical treatment,” wrote the Jack Ma Foundation.

Last January, the Foundation already donated 100 million yuan ($ 14.4 million) to support the development of the vaccine against the new strain of coronavirus.

Covid-19 pneumonia, caused by this new strain that was detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan at the end of last year, caused 1,380 deaths to date, including three outside of mainland China, and infected about 64,000 people in more than 25 countries, although 99% of these cases correspond to China.

On January 30, the World Health Organization (WHO) decreed an international emergency for the spread of the new coronavirus.
