10 days before the start of the legislative sessions, the feminist movement returned to the streets with the organization of a massive march in the capital and replicas throughout the country to demonstrate that its social demand is still in force and demand the approval of a new law.

On a date that has already become emblematic, on February 19 he returned to Argentina the National Campaign for the Right to Legal, Safe and Free Abortion. Organized in front of the Congress for the third consecutive year, the immediate treatment and approval of a Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy (IVE) law was once again demanded.

The possibility of achieving the enactment of an IVE law – after the Senate rejected in 2018 the bill approved by the deputies – seems to have greater will of the political leadership since the presidency of Alberto Fernández, first president in office to speak in favor.

However, the 2019 elections – which led to united Peronism through the Front of All again to the Government – did not renew much of the upper house. It will take a lot of political work, especially in the face of resistance from provincial representatives, to achieve a different result in the face of a new treatment, which is expected to begin this year.

“The Executive Power is going to present its own project but we present another one that we believe is more comprehensive. We hope that the threads can be moved so that this year is law, “he told Sputnik Norma, a member of the organizing committee of the Campaign.

Under the slogan “The project is on the streets”, the mobilization was carried out in around 100 locations throughout the country, where green ‘handkerchiefs’ were made (symbols of the struggle for the legalization of abortion and feminism worldwide) and informative talks, in addition to an audiovisual festival near the national legislative palace.

Women’s organizations in Ecuador, Spain, Chile, Venezuela and the Czech Republic had simultaneous mobilizations during the day in places and embassies of those countries, while in nations like Colombia the decriminalization of abortion is debated with great intensity and claims for the Femicides in Mexico.
