In this new study, published Thursday February 20 in the journal Scientific Reports, the researchers indicated that the fossil belonged to a new dinosaur unknown to science. They say the animal, which lived almost 240 million years ago, was about 10 cm long.
This new species of dinosaur was named Vellbergia bartholomaei after the name of the city where it was discovered and the fossil collector Alfred Bartholomä.
An important discovery for science
“It’s a scientific sensation,” paleontologist Rainer Schoch told the Deutsche Welle news channel.
In addition, the researchers found that the miniature skull was very similar to that of lizards and snakes of our time. This similarity can help find answers to questions related to the origin of certain modern reptiles.
“This little animal is important because we know so little about the ancestors of lizards and snakes,” said Schoch. We have discovered a new species. ”
Scientists say the prehistoric animal already existed on Earth about 20 million years before the evolution of large dinosaurs. The skull found was examined under a tomograph to determine how the dinosaur fed and what was the size of its brain.
