Russia suspends the movement of passenger trains with China for coronavirus


MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russia suspended from February 3 the circulation of all passenger trains with China due to the outbreak of the coronavirus in the Asian country, reported the Russian Railways, RZD.

Last week, Russia had already restricted rail traffic across the border with China and suspended the movement of passenger trains, except for those communicating the capitals of both countries.
“In order to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus to the territory of the Russian Federation, from 00.00 Moscow on February 3, 2020 (21.00 GMT on Sunday) and until further notice, the circulation of the traffic is temporarily suspended” trains between Moscow and Beijing, RZD announced this Sunday.
At the same time, the movement of freight trains with the Asian country is maintained.

Last Friday, Russia confirmed the first two cases of the new coronavirus and announced a battery of measures to prevent its arrival and spread in its territory, such as the suspension of most flights with China or the closure of border crossings of pedestrians and cars in the Far East.
A new coronavirus, first detected in Wuhan at the end of 2019 and cataloged as 2019-nCoV, caused more than 14,500 cases worldwide to date, mostly in China, and 305 deaths, including one outside Chinese territory .

On January 30, the World Health Organization (WHO) decreed an international emergency for the spread of the new coronavirus, although it did not recommend restricting the movement of people or goods in relation to the outbreak.
