Remco Evenepoel has defended his leader’s jersey in the Vuelta a San Juan. On the way to the Alto del Colorado, the Deceuninck-Quick Step was the main victim when the pack was pulled apart, but impressively repaired the damage.
Evenepoel was the main victim when UAE Emirates and BORA-hansgrohe pulled it off on the open roads after the Alto de la Crucecita. With less than fifty kilometers still in front of the wheels, the peloton broke apart into fans and the Belgian was forced to chase. His backlog went up to a minute and a half, but thanks to the support of Pieter Serry, Bert Van Lerberghe and Zdeněk Štybar, his fan managed to catch up with the front group again.
“In the steep descent it was pulled to the front. I was a bit confined and I ended up in the second impeller, “Evenepoel said flash interview. “I had to chase hard to come back. Fortunately I had some strong team mates around me who could help me. At the end I had to do it alone and in the end we returned to the front. In short, I am very happy that I was able to keep the white leader’s jersey and have not lost any time. ”
He expects that in the last two days, in the stages to El Villucum and San Juan, he can secure the overall victory. “It may be two sprint stages and not much wind is expected. Hopefully we can keep the peloton together and I can contribute to Álvaro (Hodeg, ed). Hopefully I can keep the sweater until Sunday, that would be very nice. “
