Faced with the multiple social conflicts that punctuated the first half of Emmanuel Macron’s five-year term, the approach of the presidential election of 2022 is apprehensive with concern. So, as Le Monde reports by referring to relatives of the President, his advisers fear his possible elimination from the first round.
“A difficult time in the quinquennium”
In speaking to the deputies on February 11, Emmanuel Macron said he was going through “a difficult time in the quinquennium”. When he met on February 18 with young people from sensitive neighborhoods in Mulhouse, he was asked about his plans in 2022.
“I’m not going to tell you what I’m going to do in 2022, there are a lot of things that can happen between now and then. At the right time, these things will have to happen, if I can do it. For the moment, we must continue to work, ”he replied.
Shortly before the municipal elections, the head of state confirmed the emergence of several opponents:
“All the difficulties are there. The oppositions are stronger. The counterpart of “at the same time” is that there are oppositions on both sides, they are in stereo “.
“The challenge […] it’s qualifying in the second round. ”
Indeed, after the movement of yellow vests which has lasted since December 2018, the pension reform continues to disturb the French. The President’s popularity rating dropped in January, according to an Ifop poll for Le Journal du Dimanche.
The strategists of the President therefore believe that anything can happen, including elimination in the first round, still according to Le Monde.
“The stake in the next presidential election is qualification for the second round,” said one of them. “I won’t bet the match will be Macron-Le Pen. I don’t feel this urge in people. ”
“Solidify this electorate”
According to another close to the President, to meet the challenge of re-election we must “solidify this electorate”, made up of “the two main competitors identified by the macronists by 2022: the right and the environmentalists”.
For these purposes, the Head of State intends to carry “politically strong and reconciliation texts”, for example on dependence or disability:
“The calm of the country will be built in the ability to give meaning to results,” he said.
