Red Cross: the best help for Libya is to restore its oil profits

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Libya still has sufficient resources to meet its humanitarian needs, so the best way to help the country is to restore its revenues from oil production, the president of the International Committee of the Red Cross told Sputnik ( ICRC), Peter Maurer.

“The best way to help Libya today would be to establish a truce and recover oil revenues in the country, since Libya is a rich country that has potential,” said Maurer.

The official explained that for that reason his agency does not want to increase humanitarian aid to Libya, although he stressed that the number of people in need is increasing, and the ICRC “will try to expand support.”

Libya remains mired in a crisis since the overthrow of its leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, resulted in violent clashes between rival factions.

Currently in the country there is a duality of powers: the interim Government together with the Parliament in Tobruk, which controls the eastern part and has the support of the Libyan National Army, commanded by Marshal Jalifa Haftar, and the Government of National Agreement, endorsed by the UN, based in Tripoli, in the northwest of the country.
