US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Wednesday that he is pleased with his visit to Saudi Arabia to discuss the US government’s strong commitment to the kingdom’s security.
“There is an ongoing need to stand with Saudi Arabia in the face of Iran’s malicious behavior in the region,” Pompeo added, in a tweet on Twitter.
The US Secretary of State arrived in Saudi Arabia yesterday, Wednesday, for talks on regional security issues, especially those related to Iran, after the oil producing region approached the brink of war, after the United States killed the prominent Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani last month, according to Reuters.
The minister told reporters accompanying him on the trip that he would discuss in meetings with Saudi King King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman over the next two days issues related to the economy and human rights, such as the case of a Saudi-American doctor who is still on trial after his detention for nearly two years.
Saudi Arabia has backed the efforts of the administration of US President Donald Trump to confront Iran, but it has warned of military action after a series of strikes that damaged oil facilities last year. Riyadh blamed Iran for the attacks. Tehran denied this.
The United States and Iran backed away from engaging in broad conflict last month after a US air strike in Iraq killed Soleimani, a strike that Tehran had responded with with missile strikes on two bases hosting US forces in Iraq that wounded more than 100 soldiers.
Pompeo said before his trip to Riyadh, “We are not in a hurry, the pressure campaign continues. It is not only a campaign of economic pressure … it is isolation through diplomacy as well.”
“We will spend a lot of time (in Riyadh) talking about security issues and in particular, the threats of the Islamic Republic of Iran, but we will also talk about many things,” he added.
