Pascal Ackermann has named the opening stage of the UAE Tour. Near Dubai Silicon Oasis he was faster in the sprint than Caleb Ewan, Rudy Barbier and Dylan Groenewegen. The German from BORA-hansgrohe is also the first leader.
Early in the stage, four riders joined forces for the long escape. Teammates Nikolay Cherkasov and Cristian Scaroni (Gazprom-RusVelo) found Leonardo Tortomasi and Veljko Stojnić of Vini Zabù-KTM and their lead was held for a long time between two and a half and three minutes.
At the hands of the sprinter teams, the lead of the leading group was reduced, and after Scaroni and Stojnić had already been caught, Cherkasov and Tortomasi were caught in the last fifteen kilometers. Eventually the stage would turn out on the expected mass sprint.
It was urgent in the final phase, in which the teams tried to position their fast men as well as possible. Luka Mezgec was dropped off in a seat by his Mitchelton-Scott teammates, but while the Slovenian started his sprint, Pascal Ackermann also entered. That then persisted until the finish.
