French Finance Minister said today, Sunday, that his country is ready to support Lebanon financially through bilateral or multilateral plans, warning of confusion between the economic recovery in the Arab country and the efforts of the United States to “confront Iran in the region.”
Bruno Le Mayer added in comments For an agency “Reuters” after the end of a meeting of financial officials in the Group of Twenty: “France is always ready to help Lebanon, this has been the case in the past and will be so in the future.”
He continued: “We know that there is a link between the two issues, but we do not want to mix the issue of economic recovery in Lebanon, which is an emergency today, with the issue of Iran. As the economic crisis in Lebanon deepens, it becomes clear that any support depends on Beirut implementing long-awaited reforms to address Root causes such as state corruption and mismanagement.
Experts cautioned against the failure of the new government, saying that the chaos scenario would be the closest if Diab’s government did not succeed. The experts said in their conversation with “Sputnik”, last Thursday, that some internal and external parties are seeking to fail the government, while the United States of America is seeking economic pressure to influence the internal political structure.
In remarks, on Wednesday, February 19, a deputy for the Amal movement, headed by Nabih Berri, Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, said Berri believed that debt restructuring was the “best solution” to the imminent maturities of the country’s international bonds.
The conversation comes in light of Lebanon facing its worst financial crises, as the government is under increasing pressure to decide on debt payments that include $ 1.2 billion in bonds due to be repaid on the ninth of March.
While Iran announced once again its willingness to provide aid to Lebanon at all levels, to extract it from the crisis economic situation, while the Lebanese authorities did not announce its position on the Tehran declaration.
In the same context, the Lebanese Prime Minister, Hassan Diab, today, Thursday, chaired a reconnaissance meeting with a delegation from the International Monetary Fund, which arrived yesterday evening Wednesday to Lebanon, in the presence of the Deputy Prime Minister, the Minister of Defense, the Minister of Finance, and the Ministers of Economy and Justice, in the government house.
