An unusual marriage took place in India between a dog and a baby. It is, however, a ritual to scare away evil spirits. Children who participate can later form more conventional marital unions, the Daily Star explains.

Photos of an unusual wedding ceremony between a one-year-old boy and a dog in the Indian state of Odisha have been posted on social media.

The baby and the animal stand next to each other, with several people surrounding them.

Purely ceremonial wedding

According to the Daily Star, it is a special ritual of the Santal tribe when the first tooth appears on an infant’s upper gum to scare away evil spirits.

Marriage is purely ceremonial, and children are allowed to form more conventional marital unions later in life, without being required to formally divorce the canine.
