A senior US official said today, Saturday, that the US decision to lift sanctions on one of two units of the Chinese oil tanker company COSCO is not an indication that the administration of US President Donald Trump is easing its “extreme pressure” policy with Iran.

The decision to lift the sanctions against the unit announced by the US Treasury on Friday is partly abolishing the punishment imposed on the company for transporting Iranian oil and came after China complained of the measure during trade talks with Washington.

According to “Reuters”, Treasury Department Boom said on Friday it had removed COSCO Shipping Tanker (Dalian) from the sanctions list, but a second unit of COSCO is still on the list.

“This administrative removal from the list should not be mistakenly interpreted as a change in the policy followed … Our campaign of maximum pressure is continuing as it was … We will impose sanctions on any activities that require this,” said the senior administration official, who asked not to be named.

China is currently the world’s only major importer of Iranian crude oil despite Trump’s re-imposing unilateral sanctions on Tehran’s oil exports in 2018 after he withdrew the United States from the Iranian nuclear deal. Tehran says its nuclear program is peaceful.

Trump hopes that sanctions will limit Tehran’s ballistic missile program and its influence across the Middle East.
