Maduro says he agrees that the Venezuelan parliament designates the new CNE


CARACAS (Sputnik) – Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro said he agrees that the National Assembly (unicameral parliament, majority opposition) is the body that appoints the new rectors of the National Electoral Council (CNE) for parliamentary elections 2020

“I have said that I agree to name it that National Assembly with which we have had and have great differences and among them they have large divisions, but I agree if a political consensus promoted by the National Dialogue Table is reached, I agree because they are signs of peace and understanding, “said the Head of State during a broadcast on the state-owned Venezuelan Television.

Maduro also welcomed the appointment of the 10 members of the Electoral Nominations Committee, which will be responsible for appointing the new members of the CNE.
“I salute that the National Assembly, the preliminary committee for the designation of the National Electoral Council, today has deliberated, has chosen the 10 members of civil society by consensus, sat the seven members of the opposition and the members of Chavismo, and by consensus the 10 names of civil society voted for the CNE Nominations Committee, “he said.
On Wednesday, the deputies of the preliminary committee announced the names of the 10 members of the Nominations Committee, among which are: Cruz Eduardo Castañeda, Alexis Corredor, Galeano Urzi, Mercedes Gutiérrez, Guillermo Miguelena, Orlando Pérez, Diana Carolina Rodríguez , Luis Serrado and Petra Tovar.

The election of a new National Electoral Council is part of the six agreements established by the Government of Nicolás Maduro and an opposition sector, at the National Dialogue Table set up on September 16.

According to the periods established in the Venezuelan Constitution, parliamentarians should be held at the end of 2020.
