Last migrant camp in northern Paris cleared

The French police have dissolved the last migrant camp in northeast Paris. The Paris Police Prefecture announced on Tuesday morning that the mission at Porte de la Villette had ended. The camp has endangered the safety of people, both migrants and residents, it said.

Just last week, the authorities had cleared a huge migrant camp around the Porte d’Aubervilliers highway entrance with more than 1,400 inmates.

France’s interior minister, Christophe Castaner, had promised to clear the illegal tent cities in northern Paris by the end of 2019, and started to do so in November last year. Especially in the north of Paris there were numerous camps, especially at the gates to the city. They have been evacuated several times – but a few weeks later, new camps were created. There is not enough accommodation for migrants in Paris and the inmates of the tent cities live in inhumane conditions.

The camp at Porte de la Villette was relatively small with a few hundred people. As a rule, the camp residents first come to temporary accommodations after they have been cleared.
