Kiwis beat India in third ODI Sweep the series | Sports | Deshabhimani


NEW DELHI: Twenty20 series defeat saw New Zealand reel in the ODI series with a complete win. The Kiwis beat India by five wickets in the third and final ODI. Chasing 297 for victory, the Kiwis reached the target in 47.1 overs for the loss of five wickets. With this, the Kiwis sweep the series (3-‐0).

The performance of half-century openers Henry Nichols and Martin Guptill was crucial to the Kiwis’ success.

Nichols hit a career-best 80 with nine fours in 103 balls. It was Nichols’ second half-century in the series. Guptill, on the other hand, hit 66 off 46 balls with four sixes and six fours. Kumar Sangakkara scored an unbeaten 106 to help the Kiwis lead the innings.

Colin de Grandhomme hit 58 off 28 balls with six boundaries and three sixes. Kane Williamson (22), Ross Taylor (12) and Jimmy Needham (19) were the other notable contributors. Tom Latham was unbeaten on 32. Chahal took three wickets for India. Jadeja and Thakur took one wicket each.

Earlier, KL Rahul scored 296 runs for the loss of seven wickets. Rahul hit 112 not out off 113 balls with nine fours and two sixes. Shreyas Iyer with a half-century, Manish Pandey with 42 runs and Prithvi Shah with 40 runs.

This is Rahul’s fourth century in ODIs Rahul’s maiden Test century in New Zealand came off the batting number five. Rahul hit nine fours and six sixes in his 104-ball knock.

India lost the toss and lost the opener. Mayank Agarwal’s wicket was gone when eight runs came on the scoreboard. Jamison was dismissed by Mayank for a one-run triple. Kohli, 9, followed with Bennett to Jamison. The return of the Indian captain was a complete disappointment in the series.

Later, Prithvi Shah and Shreyas Iyer put on an innings. Prithvi Shah hit 40 off 42 balls with three fours and two sixes. With Prithvi Shah running out, India was back on the defensive. But Shreyas took Rahul back and brought India back into the game. The duo combined for a fourth wicket partnership. Shreyas Iyer was unbeaten on 62 off 63 balls and Jimmy Neesham broke the partnership.

Next was Manish Pandey’s chance. Pandey and Rahul combined for 107 runs for the fifth wicket. The duo ended Bennett’s return by dismissing Rahul for 112. Pandey left the crease for the next ball. Pandey scored 42 off 48 balls with the help of two fours. Shardul Thakur hit seven fours and a six. Ravindra Jadeja and Navdeep Saini were unbeaten on eight.

For New Zealand, Bennett took four wickets for 64 runs in 10 overs. Jamieson and Needham took one wicket each.
