Jean-Marie Dedecker expects early elections at Easter and does not rule out a new cartel between N-VA and CD&V.

“It would be an ideal time to unpack again with List Dedecker (LDD).” Jean-Marie Dedecker not only expects early elections, he is already preparing for it mentally. The independent Member of the House – good for nearly 41,000 preferential votes in the elections in May 2019 – is still hesitant about what he will do: push the West-Flemish N-VA House List again, or wake up his own party.

Why do you think LDD would be viable? Jean-Marie Dedecker: My political gut feeling tells me that I could be successful as a party between the established values and Vlaams Belang. People are very displeased with the ongoing government formation. In the next elections, I fear that Vlaams Belang will achieve 25 percent. The French-speaking parties have every interest in that. How so? Dedecker: The greater Vlaams Belang, the smaller the specific weight of the other Flemish parties. At least, as long as the cordon sanitaire exists. I maintain that it is a missed opportunity that the N-VA did not form a front with Vlaams Belang in the formation of Flemish government. According to Servais Verherstraeten (CD&V), politicians should not talk too much about new elections. That is how confidence melts around the table, he said in The Seventh Day. Dedecker: What confidence is he talking about? I don’t see any rapprochement. Only a lot of show as long as the cameras are running, but nothing happens behind the scenes. There is nevertheless talk with the PS. A deal with Paul Magnette (PS) is possible? Dedecker: Yes. The Parti Socialiste is a party of power, it could make concessions at the community level. But MR-president Georges-Louis Bouchez profiles himself as the great nationalist. He and Magnette are already in campaign mode, they only sell election talk. You cannot negotiate like this. Several top politicians warn that early elections can herald the end of Belgium. Dedecker: The country is already unmanageable. As a Member of Parliament, I am right in the middle of it. Look at all the economic figures: it has been enough. Belgium is in palliative care, it is now time for euthanasia. Let it all explode. The French speakers have to come to the table to talk about a new construction in Belgium. Do you think it is really impossible for the N-VA to work with the PS after all? Dedecker: Every party that now rules starts a suicide mission. See the national debt, see the budget gap of 12 billion euros. Who will pay for that? And how? The CD&V maintains that it does not want to rule without the N-VA. Dedecker: What is the value of the CD&V word? I think it is really tilting internally at the CD&V. Hilde Crevits is a shadow chairman. The alliance between her and N-VA chairman Bart De Wever is very strong. Stronger than that between De Wever and CD&V chairman Joachim Coens. Can that alliance lead to a new cartel? Dedecker: A cartel could, yes. There is a lot of rapprochement and things are maturing. Please note: a new N-VA / CD & V cartel does not have to count on me. (laughs)
