That motivated him to run for office.
“I’m ready to take on more responsibility,” emphasized Amthor, who was elected as the second youngest member of the German Bundestag in 2017 and caused a sensation with rhetorically polished speeches. He often takes very conservative views for a man of his generation and does not avoid discussion. This made him one of the most sought-after political discussion partners on talk shows.
Despite his youth and a lack of experience in national politics, Amthor, in his own words, feels ready for the task as head of the regional party.
“It’s not about age, it’s about arguments,” he said. Many members would have called him and wished that the Northeast CDU would not be on the defensive, but that the leadership question would be resolved quickly from a “position of strength”. That’s why he decided to run for the country’s presidency.
The Northeast CDU had been unprepared for Kokert’s resignation announcement at the end of last week, for which he claimed purely private reasons. For his successor at the head of the state parliamentary group, he proposed Parliamentary Managing Director Torsten Renz, who already declared his willingness to do so. Kokert made no proposal for the party presidency.
It was agreed that the 41-year-old would also lead the Union as a top candidate in the state election campaign in 2021. A new candidate must now also be found for this task. Amthor left it open whether he wanted to do this when he was elected country chairman. “We now have to conduct a process as a national association. The state chairman has the first right of access and is also responsible for leading this process. I don’t ban myself from thinking, ”said Amthor.
