Beans, fish or spinach are not able to cure depression, but they can improve mental health, found a study by the American health group Mayo Clinic taken up by the German site Focus.
To boost morale, scientists recommend eating legumes, fish, nuts, broccoli, spinach and eggs more often.
Priority should be given to fish containing a large amount of omega-3 fatty acids, namely herring, tuna and salmon.
Studies have shown that these acids can relieve symptoms of depression by triggering the production of the so-called happiness and pleasure hormones, serotonin and dopamine.
But not only
Beans, nuts and eggs maintain the level of serotonin because the body converts the amino acid tryptophan into a mood-enhancing hormone. Besides, tryptophan is also important for the sleep-wake cycle.
Spinach and broccoli are rich in folic acid, also called vitamin B9, a deficiency of which can cause sleep disturbances and lead to depression.
In addition, scientists point out that in times of stress, cheese, hamburgers and hot dogs should be avoided at all costs.
They insist, however, that all these foods are only capable of improving mood and that in case of symptoms of depression or panic, it is important to consult a doctor urgently.
