US Attorney General Hafiz Saeed, who was sentenced to 11 years in jail by Pakistani court in two registered cases for financing terrorism, has been charged with terrorism, including the Mumbai attacks. The US says they believe Hafiz Saeed was the mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which killed 166 people, including six Americans. A Home Ministry spokesman said.
Hafiz Saeed has been involved in terrorist attacks in several places including Mumbai. The spokesman said in response to the Pakistani court verdict last week against Saeed. This is seen as the first step against those seeking to disrupt peace in South Asia. He also urged Pakistan to take further action against terrorists, financiers and its spokesmen.
Last week, Alice Wells, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South-Central Affairs in the US, said that Pakistan’s move against Hafiz Saeed was a “strong step towards terrorism.”
