THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state government has reduced the price of bottled water despite many objections from various angles. The bottled water is fixed at Rs 13 per liter. As part of this, bottled water is included in the list of essential ingredients. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan signed the Food Department’s file.

Minister P Thilothaman said the price regulation will come into effect soon. The cost of a liter of bottled water is less than six rupees. It is being bought by companies for Rs 8. Vendors sell it for a profit of Rs 12.

In addition to the revised price, the government has also decided to make the quality mandated by BIS mandatory. With this, the illegal companies are expected to be shut down. On May 10, 2018, various bottled water companies decided to reduce the price of water at a meeting with Minister P Thillathaman. The decision was to sell it at Rs 12 per liter. However, this was not implemented due to opposition from traders. Some white companies also came out against it.

The producers had decided to sell the bottled water at Rs. 12 but this was not implemented. The merchant businessman’s co-ordinating committee had held that bottled water could not be sold. The price of a liter of bottled water is Rs.
