The mission of “royal commissioner” Koen Geens (CD&V) is to choose between two options: a coalition with or without the N-VA. That is what MR chairman and former informer Georges-Louis Bouchez has said on Twitter.

“For some there are two possible ways today. For others there are fewer. It is therefore more time than ever to start the formation of a federal government, which means choosing between the two existing options. That is the role of Koen Geens, who will start from the note that we have worked out, “says Bouchez.

The dilemma of CD&V

King Filip unexpectedly ended the assignment of Bouchez and CD&V chairman Joachim Coens as informateur on Friday evening. It was extended a few days ago and in principle ran until next Tuesday. Geens was commissioned without an explicit title with the intention of “taking the necessary initiatives to enable the formation of a fully-fledged government.”

CD&V thus faces its responsibility in a certain sense. For the time being, the Flemish Christian Democrats did not want to abandon the N-VA to form a coalition, because according to them a federal coalition should be based on a majority in Flanders, which is not possible without the N-VA. On the other hand, the PS, who is almost incontournable to get a federal majority up, does not consider it possible to find points of agreement with the Flemish nationalists despite the numerous meetings that both parties had led of the informers.

“Result booked”

“We achieved results by excluding hypothetical solutions and by making it possible for the CD&V to return to the negotiating table,” said Bouchez. “It is unacceptable that the first and third Flemish parties were kept out of the negotiations, as was the case when we took up our position. Our wish to respect the will expressed in the elections has come true. “
