Crash between two buses leaves at least 11 dead in southern Peru


LIMA (Sputnik) – A collision between two passenger buses in the Peruvian department of Arequipa (south) left at least 11 people dead and more than 30 wounded, local media reported.

“Arequipa. The number of deaths caused by the collision of two buses of the Transportes del Carpio and Santillana companies increased to 11,” Radio Nacional FMI reported in its Twitter social network account, after the six deaths of the initial reports.

According to the media, the incident would have occurred at 1:30 p.m. local time (6:30 p.m. GMT) when the bus from the Santillana company, which arrived in Arequipa, collided head-on against another from the Del Carpio company, which left the city.

The bus that arrived in the city was destroyed on the road and several passengers had to be rescued from among the irons, while the other vehicle ended up on the side of the road.

So far the reasons for the accident that occurred at the entrance of the city of Arequipa are unknown.

In 2019, more than 700 people died in road accidents in Peru, according to data from the National Police.
