Pharmaceutical companies say the drop in the import of chemicals from China has led to higher prices for drugs. Indian companies buy 70 percent of their pharmaceutical ingredients from China. But despite the high cost of medicines, including paracetamol, there has been no action on the part of the central government.
The price of the chemical (Active Pharmaceutical Incredient-API) required to manufacture penicillin has increased significantly. In January, the unit price of a unit API increased from Rs 454 to Rs 639.
Antibiotics, including azithromycin, doxycycline, amikacin, amoxicillin, ornidazole, and dexamethasone sodium, increased by 13 to 18 percent. The API required to make paracetamol rose by 26% to Rs 330. Experts in the region say the price of drugs will increase by 30 to 40 per cent if the current situation continues.
